Evaluation

Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Another convention i decided to follow was to make the name of the main artist stand out among them all. This would mean that my target audience would quickly recognise the name of the artist and want to read more about them. The font size is larger than the other cover lines, this allows the main artist to stand out and others and attract more attention. My magazines cover lines and main cover lines are very similar to Nylon magazines. All the cover lines use the same font type, just like Nylon magazine. The font used is very consistent through out my magazine. I decided to follow this convention as I wanted my music magazine to look bold, attractive and also simple.

Whilst creating my magazine I was inspired by the existing magazines NYLON and VIBE. I have used the two magazines to plan how I was going to layout the front cover of y magazine. My magazine follows the conventions of successful existing magazines that are different to other existing magazines. Like NYLON and VIBE, my music magazine is very simple and uncluttered. I used very little space as I wanted the image to be the main attraction of the front cover. The cover lines were placed away from the image at the sides of the front cover so it did not obstruct the image. My audience asked for more images and less writing, so this is a way I will appeal to them.

My magazines layout is very different to other music magazines as it does not have the tagline beside he masthead but beside the barcode. I decided not to follow this convention as I wanted to make my magazine look different from any other and the tagline looks more appealing beside the barcode rather than the top. My music products audience will be able to see the tagline as it is next to the price of the magazine is written in bold yellow font.
I decided to follow the convention of the barcode at the bottom right of my front cover. I did this because it would not have made much of a difference to my magazine if I placed it elsewhere. The barcode is placed somewhere where my audience will take notice of it quickly and the barcode will not obstruct my front cover.

The planning and research I did before I made my college magazine helped me too understand the conventions of a music magazine and why things are placed were they are. The textual analysis and the contents page analysis helped me to know what I needed to do in order for my college magazine to look as professional as possible. Analysing the techniques used by magazines such as Kerrang! and NME taught me to make my magazines be of quality. There were certain aspects of these magazines that contributed towards my magazine looking more professional and readable. My questionnaire also guided me, as it told me exactly what my target audience wanted from my magazine. This would result in my magazine being successful as my target audience chose what was going to be in it.

Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My music magazine focuses on pop-rock, punk and indie music genres which appeal to my audience in these subcultures. The genres of my music magazine are all very similar and their audiences are interested in the same type of music. I decided not just to stick to one specific social group but to include content that will be appealing to social groups that are very similar.

The model on the front page of my music magazine is the typical female in the Indie and Rock music industry. It is shown by the clothes she wears and how she comes across to the audience. The women in these music genres wear clothes that connote individuality. The indie/rock style gives the ‘just woke up and threw this on’ look which many women in the rock/indie music industry wear both stylish and effortlessly. The model on the front page is an example of this, though her outfit looks more co-ordinates and put together than rock/indie artists would. I want my audience to immediately recognize the genre the magazine is and I believe this outfit allows the audience to have a clear idea of the type of music my magazine will include. I wanted my model to represent the social group of which my magazine will be targeted at. It is very important for me to do this because if I do not appeal to my audience, my magazine will unfortunately not sell. I decided to follow this convention but in a way that my model looks tidier and less scruffy, a look which many indie/rock artists go for. This is because I want my model to be taken more seriously. My model’s outfit is bold with a feminine touch. She is wearing a blue blouse which is buttoned up to the top. This is a new style which is very popular among the indie crowd. I decided o follow this convention as the buttoned to the top blouse connotes power and authority. Likewise her trousers as they too connote that she is able to take control and remain stylish. Men dominate in the rock/indie charts so I decided to represent a strong indie female musician through he clothing. Her hair is very simple bob, but it is quite scruffy looking which defines the rock/indie social group. I deliberately used the guitar as a prop as the acoustic guitar is a popular instrument indie/rockers use. It will also attract the rock/indie social group as they may have something in common with the model.

The model on the contents page wears an oversized green jacket which is usually worn by festival goers. This mainly represents the indie social group as they wear clothing which is comfortable yet fashionable and attractive. This laidback style is now even popular with other social groups which listen to music such as dub step to pop. Varied social groups are captivated by the style of the models as it is increasingly becoming more popular. This will result in my magazine becoming more popular. The models featured on the contents page’s facial expression is quite quirky and blissful. This represents the type of music my magazine features. The way her hands are positioned presents an image of satisfaction and triumph.

The model on the double page spread represents the rock subcultures. She wears Doc Marten’s with a black dress. The outfit represents rebelliousness and non conformity. Quite the opposite to her outfit on the front cover. The models hold a guitar on the both the front covers and the double page spread. The guitar is used as a prop on the double page spread and is broken. This represents the way rock stars smashed their guitars during performances. People in this social group will appeal to this image as is it seen as something ‘cool’ and ‘daring’ to do.

Q3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The target audience of our magazines is very different but the target social classes are same. The social class our magazines attract are people of both working class and middle class audience. Bauer should then publish my magazine as they are aware of what the working/middle class require from a magazine, whether it targets the same audience or not. My audience will therefore be able to afford the price of the magazine as Bauer publish magazines which are low to middle priced.
Bauer publishing house’s current magazines are targeted at a very specific audience whose interests are very similar. These magazines include Bella; Take a Break and TV Choice. All of the magazines they publish are of the same genre. They continuously attract the same audience through their magazines. This will result in them not reaching out to large successful brands that will increase their revenue. My media product will drive and require them to do this. My media product is a music magazine, which Bauer currently do not publish. Publishing my magazine would diversify Bauer’s image and make them more appealing to a wider audience. Though Bauer’s existing magazines and my magazine is very different its quality is parallel.
My magazine would be ideal for Bauer Publications as they sell no magazines that are similar to mine. Their existing magazines are very similar to one another and have fierce competition. My magazine is the only music magazine with a young target audience, so competition will not be an issue. This results in Bauer making an immense profit as there are no other magazines impeding mine from becoming successful.
In order for my magazine to be well known and recognized, it will be distributed in shops such as WH Smith and local news agents with will be in every area. This way my media product can reach out to teenagers who go to buy school and university supplies or go for a quick snack at their local shop. This way my magazine will be easily accessible and the audience have a wider selection of music magazines they can choose from. Though my media product is very different to others that are currently sold. My target audience is aware of how technology works and they take full advantage of it. Four out of five teenagers use a wireless device such as a mobile phone. My music magazine will be able to be purchased and read on Smartphone’s such as the iphone, HTC and Blackberry. Technology a way for my target audience to be entertained and is a means of communication. My magazine will therefore reach my target audience no matter where they are. They are not only restricted to reading of paper, but they can be entertained interactively.

Q4.Who would be the audience for your media product?

For my media product my target audience will be young people who enjoy listening to music on their computers, phones, C.D., radio and vinyl. My music magazine is targeted at both males and females but will attract more a female audience than male. They are people who enjoy listening to rock/ indie music. The audience who will read my music magazine would listen to music on channels such a MTV2 and Kerrang!.

People who read my magazine will be between the ages of 16 and 14 years. My magazine attracts young adults who would understand and relate to the content of my music magazine. My magazine would not attract an older audience as most of the artists featured would be bands that have just come together or musicians that have just broke into the music world. They may not be interested din bands such as ‘You Me at Six’ as their music is quite modern unlike band like The Beetles who have been around for a long time and are known by people of all ages. The price of the magazine is also very affordable for young adults who may not receive a large income.

As my target audience is young males and females between the ages of 16-24, they may be unemployed, working, in college or in university. They have more free time, which they may spend listening to music, going to parties and reading. My target audience’s background is very varied as rock and indie music appeals to people of all races but is very popular with white working/middle-class people who mainly listen to rock/indie music. The reason why I featured a black young woman on the front cover is because she will attract a wider audience. My magazine is very similar to NME whose demographic profile is of people of a working class background who are music enthusiastic.

My music magazine would appeal to people in the UK and outside of the UK. Rock has been around for a long time and has evolved continuously. But indie music is quite new and is only quite popular in the UK though it’s becoming known in the USA.

Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?

I ensured that the feedback given from my audience was used to create my magazine. This was important because they are the people who will buy my magazine. This will mean that my audience will be attracted to my magazine as I met their requirements and needs.
The front cover is the main selling point of my magazine as 40% of all magazine purchases are reliant on the appeal of the front page. My model between the ages of 16-24 I used a female model that fit the demographic of my music magazine. I used a female model because I believe that she will attract both male and female audiences. I did not want to stick to a specific gender but wanted my music magazine to appeal to both young men and women. Using a female model, my female audience can relate to her and admire her as a musician. My male target audience will be attracted to her femininity and look. Her look was very vital as this was the main selling point and is what makes the magazine look appealing. My target audience can relate to the model as her style of clothing is very popular and is worn in many ways by many young indie girls. They way she wore her blouse is the way young men now wear their shirts so they can also relate to her style. I wanted my music magazine to portray music in a stylish and ‘cool’ way as style in the music industry is very vital. It gives the musician more presence, something I believe the model on my front page has.
Rock/ indie music is very popular in the UK but is also popular in countries such as America who have many rock idols originating from there. Though indie music is not very big in America it is becoming increasingly well known. Bands such as MGMT, which my target are likely to listen to, have introduced indie music internationally. Popular international indie/ rock bands will be featured in my magazine as they will appeal to a wider audience who like American music as well as British.
My questionnaire results told me that my target audience prefers images to a lot of writing. As the front cover is magazines main selling point. I used my results to appeal to my target audience as my magazine has very few cover lines, allowing the image to be the main attraction. The layout of my front cover, contents page and double page spread are all very simple. I did not want my music magazine to look cluttered but simple yet striking. This will attract my audience as rock/indie fashion is all quite laid back, it consists of pieces put together to create something innovative and new.

My main cover line is focused on an artist called Berry coming back into the music industry. This will attract the audience’s attention as this news could be exiting and interesting. The audience is more than likely to know Berry, so they will be to find out more about her. The short and sharp main cover line draws the reader’s attention and makes them want to know more about Berry and her return. This is the reason why I used capital letters with an outline around Berry’s name as her name will be remembered by the reader. The outline of her name is the same colour as her blouse. I wanted a cohesive style to run through my magazine. The matching and similar colours such as blue will attract my audience as it is a neutral colour which ids loved by girls and boys, my target audience.

My media product has a consistent colour scheme which flows through the front cover, contents page and double page spread. The main colours I used were blue, yellow and white. The colours I chose are all quite neutral colours that work together to create an enthralling magazine that will appeal to my audience. My magazine inspiration was Nylon magazine which targets people of a similar age to mine. Like Nylon, my magazine’s masthead is very bold and large. This draws the attention of the reader making my masthead stand out among others. L I V E is written in large bold sans serif font which connotes youthfulness and will attract a younger audience. I continued to use the same font for most my magazine but used varied text sizes as appropriate so it would look entertaining. This also made my magazine look professional.
My target audience is young people between the ages of 16-24. This means that the price of my magazine has be low as they may not be able to afford buying an expensive magazine. The results from the questionnaire prove this as my target audience is willing to pay £1.50 for my music magazine. The price will appeal to my target audience because it is low and affordable and is cheaper than other magazine out there which are similar to my magazine such as NME, which is £2.20.
I have very few cover lines that will captivate my target audience. The ‘Top Bands of the Month’ cover line is what many other successful magazines include on their front cover which will attract the audience. I included this because it is a music magazine and my target audience may know these bands that are in the magazine. The other bands names will draw the attention of more people. My music magazine covers two genres of music which many people listen to. Though the bands and musicians are quite different but they are all in very similar genres which are connected.

Q6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Making my college magazine enabled me to learn a lot about the technologies which I could use in order to create a good magazine. The more I used Photoshop when creating my college magazine, the things I learnt to use to create an even better magazine, my music magazine product.

I used a Canon E05 400D to take the photographs needed for my music magazine. This is a high quality camera which made my photographs look more defined and clearer. I was first going to use a Canon Powershot a1100 is, but the quality of the photographs taken using the Canon E05 400D was much better. I too my images in various locations so my magazine could have some variation. I took pictures In a studio with professional equipment. I had never used such technology to take photographs before, but the quality of the pictures taken was very good. I used the Bowens Gemini Esprit Flash, Bowens Radio Trigger and a 60cm Soft Box. I quickly learnt how to use the technologies I had never used before, though it took time to set up and understand how to use it.
I also took photographs beside the River Thames in the evening which was quite difficult as the lighting was quite dark. I did not want to take photographs during the day as I wanted to take two contrasting photographs for my front cover and double page spread. My pictures come out quite dark but I edited it on Photoshop to make it clearer and visible. I changed the contrast levels of the photograph to make it brighter. There were strong winds and the temperatures dropped which meant that it was harder to hold the camera. All of these factors meant that the original non manipulated photographs were very dark. The photograph taken for my front cover was quite easy to take as the lighting was very good so the photograph did not have to be edited much on Photoshop. I took many photographs as I wanted to choose form a variety so I cold have the best quality photographs for my media product.
I then had to transfer the photographs from the camera onto the computer. To do this I used a card reader which reads the information and uploads them quicker. When the upload was complete I chose the images I was going to edit and use for my college magazine. I took many photographs so it was quite a long process narrowing it down to one image. I had to consider all factors as I chose the photographs. I had to consider the lighting, quality and if the picture was good enough to be in my media product. Instead of using the magnetic lasso tool to cut around my image I kept the backgrounds as I thought the background suited my magazine and would attract my audience. Though I did do a test front cover to see how it would look if I used it on my front cover. It was a quite complicating process, but I soon figured out how to use it properly.
In order for my magazine to look as professional as possible I had to get a barcode from the internet to copy onto my front cover. I then saved it and opened it again on Photoshop. I then dragged it onto my front cover and transformed it. I also used the text tool to the date, the issue and the price of the magazine on the barcode.

In order for me to write on the front cover, contents page and double page spread I use the text tool which allowed to me write on the pages. This was the simplest tool to use as I only needed to click one button and position the text line where I wanted. I used the same font for most of my magazine, I did not want it to look boring so I used the effects bar to create a glowing outline around the cover line and masthead. This made it look more attractive to look at, which would make my audience interested in reading it.
Q7. Looking back at the preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to a full product?

Creating my college magazine has enabled me to learn the skills I needed to do my music magazine. Making my college magazine showed me how much work was going to be needed in creating an excellent music magazine. The college magazine was a much simpler task as I did not use an A3 canvas which would take more work and effort to complete. My A3 sheet had to be filled completely with entertaining content to attract my audience. Using Photoshop Creating my first magazine was quite difficult as it was my first time using Photoshop in this way. But as I progressed and created my music magazine I used many tools such as the lasso tool and the various brushes. The use of all of these tool contributed into making my magazine look professionally made.

Time management was very important, as I had learn’t from the preliminary task. I had time to take all of the pictures I needed to be featured in the magazine. Before I went out to take any pictures, I planned the location I would be taking the pictures at, what clothing my model would wear and what props were required. The models and I arranged which time they were available and how much time they had. After this I booked a camera which I could use to take the pictures.

I managed the locations which my pictures were to be taken, the props and the costumes worn. These small details make the greatest impact on how my media product will turn out and whether it will be successful or not managing my location was very difficult as the wind by the river was very strong and cold. This affected the quality of my images. The quality of my images was then restored by me editing them on Photoshop.

The type and the size of the font I used may made a major difference to how my target audience would be attracted to my media product. I was very careful with the font I wanted my magazine to be as professional looking as possible. The decided to be consistent with the font I used as I did not want my magazine to look childish, as this will not appeal to my audience. I used a bold sand serif font for my masthead witch grabs the attention of the reader instantly. I also used a glowing effect in my masthead so it stood out even more. This is something I learn’t to do as I was completing my main task. I did not know how to use such effects when I did my college magazine. The font will appeal to both sexes as it is written in a simple yet bold font.

In conclusion, creating my preliminary helped me plan out my work carefully and gave me an idea of what I was to do. I drew sketches of both my from page and my contents page which gave me an idea of what I want the magazine to look like. All of these things work other to create and enticing magazine.
I decided to ensure that my magazine followed similar conventions to other magazines so that my magazine looked professional. However, I wanted to make my magazine differ so that it could stand out. One convention I decided to go against was the ‘masthead behind the picture’ this is a well-known and often used convention that I decided to go against. This made my masthead standout as it was more visible, easier to read and different.

Post Production Feedback

Front Cover

Strengths

The audience was very attracted to my front cover as it was very bold and eye catching. The masthead also worked very well as it was bold and intriguing to look at. It looked very professional because of the colours used and the layout of the page. The colours went very well and both boys and girls were interested in reading it. The way the cover lines were placed were very easy to read and made the page look more entertaining and creative. It was different to all other magazine which have the same continuous style, but this magazine had its own individual flair.

Weaknesses

Some of my target audience thought that my magazine could have had some stronger colours such as red to make it more noticeable. My masthead also needed to be more noticeable as white can fade and become unnoticed. Few also felt that I could have chosen another background which could have brought more attention onto the model instead of the reader looking behind her. They said that I could have cut the image out of the background and placed it on a plain canvas. Some agreed that I could have chosen another font to show variation and make the magazine look more young and appealing. Another criticism was that the model could have held the guitar as if she was playing it instead. This is because the audience may feel a connection to her and they may be inspired to do what she is doing. Some said my cover lines were too limited and that I could have added more so the page looked more filled.

Contents

Strengths

Some said the contents page was very clear and concise. That they could see the page numbers clearly and would not be confused by a lot of text. Also that the font is not too small. This way they are able to read the contents of the magazine without a fuss. They also like my contents pages colour scheme and how it went with the front covers. The colours were quite ‘futuristic’ and mysterious, which attracted them more to reading the mag. Like the front cover, the contents title stood out which made the audience want to read more. They also liked the editors note as it looked very professional and well put together.

Weaknesses

They commented that my contents page looked like a webpage due to the tab like sub titles. Also that I could have used another image on the page for it too look more appealing and for the audience to have more to look at and be entertained. I also could have added more pages on the contents page so the audience has more to choose from to read and look at.

Double Page Spread

Strengths

The image I used was very striking and was very nice to look at. This made an impact on the story as a whole and made them want to find out more about the model. The colours used made the page look bright which contrasted the dark background. The location which I took the picture in was very beautiful attention grabbing. The newspaper style title was very individual looking and looked different o all magazine articles that have the generic plain heading. Was told that the double page spread looked very readable and entertaining.

Weaknesses

The pictures quality could have been better and the same with the lighting. I could have gone earlier when the lighting could have been better,

Case Study of a Publishing House

Case Study of Publishing House- Bauer Media Group

This case study is based on Bauer media publishing house. I have chosen this publishing house because they publish a wide variety of magazines and do not only stick to one specific audience.
Bauer was founded in Hamburg, Germany and has expanded from there. Bauer is a family private owned publishing house which started up as a very small printing house since 1875 but has now grown into an international publishing house which operates in 15 different countries: Germany, USA, Spain, France, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Mexico, China, Russia, Slovakia, United Kingdom and Nigeria. Bauer is currently to largest publishing company in the UK. This is due to them publishing media about Women’s and Men’s Lifestyle, Music & Film, Specialist magazine markets, TV Listings, Puzzles and Women’s Weeklies.
Due to the expansion of the Bauer family business this meant that the company required a very large team of 6400 member of staff across the globe. All working in their chosen countries to run the publishing company. The Bauer publishing house is an example of business success, as the started off as a printing house and now own offices across the globe.
Bauer media started in the UK with the launch of Bella magazine [1987-present day]. Bella is a magazine targeted at the modern day woman which focuses on entertaining real life stories alongside celebrity gossip, practical lifestyle tips and advice for today’s modern woman. Bella has been around for a very long time and has an overall ACB of 245,286. Bauer them published another women’s weekly magazine, Take a Break. Take a Break appealed to many women and rapidly became a market leader. It has held a Number 1 status selling over 1 million copies a week.
Bauer also own the music magazines Q and Kerrang! Q is a music magazine which is published monthly in the United Kingdom which has a circulation of 130,127 [June 2007]. Q focuses on the indie, rock music genre. Kerrang! Is a music magazine which is published weekly, also in the United Kingdom. The total circulation is 134,000.The genre of Kerrang! Magazine is rock, heavy metal. Kerrang! appeals to a younger audience of 16-14 unlike Bella which is aimed at female adults. Bauer reaches out to many different people through the media they produce. This can also be said for the radio stations they own. Kiss 100 radio stations targets a younger audience who will most likely not listen to Magic 105.4 radio station.
Bauer owns radio stations such as Magic 105.4 and Kiss 100. The brands Bauer own do not appeal to a particular audience but branch out to both adults and young people. Magic and Kiss radio stations appeal to different audiences. Magic aims to lift the listener’s mood by playing classic and contemporary music to put a smile on their faces. Their core viewers are people who are comfortable in their own skin and are confident individuals within the family unit. The main listeners are 24-44 year olds, mainly women who appreciate the radios lack of clutter and quality programming. Magic believe they target a very wide audience as they appeal to working mums, housewives and young professionals. Kiss radio is very different to Magic Radio as it continuously evolves around the ever changing lifestyles of its UK 15-34 year old market. Its mission is ‘’never stand still’ which explains how Kiss continuously discovers new music and cool stuff from all over the world. Kiss ensures that its consumers are in control. Their listeners are able to interact with the programming of the radio station on television and online. The philosophy ‘for the people, by the people’ ensures this. Kiss’s music genre is different to Magic as they give them the best of dance, hip hop and R&B.
Bauer have many media platforms which appeal to a very wide audience. This is the reason why they have continued to grow. They publish media which can be read, watched and listened to. An example of this is TV Choice magazine, Box Television and Kiss100 Radio Station. This is what is different about Bauer as they venture into other media to reach out to as many potential consumers as possible. Bauer has continuously expanded throughout Europe and blossoming through their many media platforms.

Characteristics of A Contents Page

Characteristics of Contents Pages

• 1 large image on the 1st contents, page 8 images on 2nd contents page. The large close-up photograph is of Frank Zappa a famous musician. He has been in the music industry for many years so he is recognised by Mojo readers. 2nd page consists of various images.

• Mojo 154 pages on content. The page numbers continue onto the second contents page. This would be the reason why they have a second contents page.

• The first contents page’s layout is very simple as the text is looks well put together as the text is not obstructing the image. Mojo want Zappa not be seen clearly and for him to be the main focus on the contents page and not the text.

• The second contents pages payout ids very different from the first as the photographs used have been arranged like a collage. This shows variation and creativity. The text is placed on the right side of the page. It allows the contents page to look balanced, neat looking and simple.

• The photographs used are all very artistic looking pictures. Though one stands out the most as it is bright red and is hanging on the edge of the line of the photographs. This gives the image the most attention. This is a way Mojo has chosen to promote albums.

• First contents page, the colours used are black and red for the text and blue for the background.

• Send contents page, the colours used are red, blue, black and gold. The background colour is a plain and simple white.

Music Magazine Inspiration

Nylon magazine has given me an insight into what I want my music magazine to look like and what it will contain. Nylon magazine is an American magazine which focuses on fashion and pop culture. It is a bright and colourful magazine which instantly catches the attention of passers by. I did not want my music magazine to be the same as many others, boring, plain and repetitive but to be different from all of the others that are being created. Like Nylon magazine music magazine will stand out among others with its bold masthead and eye catching front cover image. The celebrity’s features on the covers of Nylon magazine are all very known and popular and even if someone does not know them, they will want to know more about them after looking at their picture. This is how I want my audience to be towards my music magazine, I want them to be attracted and want to read my music magazine as it is aimed towards them. The design of the above front cover will be quite similar to my own as I intend to replicate the image taken of Ashley Olsen. Though I will use some of the ideas from this front cover, my music magazine will be unique as I have added my own creative ideas into creating my soon to be successful music magazine.

Textual analysis of music magazine double page spread

Textual analysis of a music magazine double page spread
Textual analysis of a music magazine double page spread

Connotation

The double page consists of a young woman with vibrant red hair, wearing a black dress with cones covering her bust. She wears very high black boots. She sits upon silk red and white boxed stages. She looks directly towards the camera. Behind her is written ‘USA got the love’. There sis also text written in a smaller font on the bottom right on the page.

Denotation

The magazine consists of a coloured photograph of Florence, the singer of the band. She sits upon a covered red and white stripped stage. The colours used may represent the USA without it being brazen. The colours used also contrasts the colour of her hair. This allows the colour of her vibrant red hair to stand out even more. The read and white stripped silk sheet also brings colour to the article as it is very plain and simple. It also draws in the readers focus completely on Florence.

This photograph is mainly aimed at men as her choice of clothing brings a lot of attention to her legs and her breasts. Her legs are exposed as she wears a very short dress, but manages not to look like a loose woman. She has positioned her legs purposely to reveal them more and for the reader too see them better. She is very poised this allows her to achieve the ‘sexy’ look and still look quite reserved. Her dress/costume is very eccentric and makes a statement even though the colour black is very mute. Black shiny cones cover her breasts, this stylish and unconventional way of dress. Indie artists such as Florence and the Machine usually steer away from the norm of mainstream music. As ‘USA got the love’ for her she may have to alter her image to be able to appeal to them. This is style of dress is very popular with many artists such as Lady Gaga [American] who are wearing very provocative and revealing clothing.

Her non verbal communication is shown through her facial expression as she stares flirtatiously towards the camera. She looks directly at the camera, her way of being in touch with the readers and her fans. She sits on the top of the boxed stages; this connotes how she has climbed from the very bottom to the top of the music scene. It is not very easy for British artists to branch out into the American charts but they have managed to achieve this as they now play live shows/concerts in the USA. The colour of her hair is very different and unique. The colour is enhanced and looks very bold. Her hairstyle has now become a trend that many young women now follow. Red hair was a hair colour that was once disliked by various people but now many women have the confidence to embrace this hair colour. This can be clearly seen from the confidence that comes across from this photograph. This is portrayed through her pose; Florence is sat in a bold and authoritive position.

Textual Analysis Of Music Magazine

Textual Analysis of Kerrang!’s Magazine front page
Denotation
The magazine cover consists a coloured photograph of five young men all looking directly at the camera. It is a medium shot photograph of them standing up. They are all standing up but one of the young men is closer to the front than the others. He is noticed first and is seen quicker than the others. He holds onto the left cuff of his suit and the other member stand with their arms unseen. All of the young men are wearing smart clothing. They are all wearing white shirts and ties and four of them are wearing suit blazer jackets.
Behind the young men is the masthead, their heads cover some of the letters of the masthead. There are five separate cover lines which are all written in black, red and white.
The barcode is visible in the bottom right hand corner of the magazine.
Connotation
Kerrang!’s masthead is very characteristic, noticeable and distinguishable.  It is written in a sans sheriff font. This is used as Kerrang magazine is a considerably modern magazine. As there target audience is between the ages of 16-25. This font will appeal to them as it is attractive, contemporary and individual. The kerrang masthead is distinguishable as it is not only written in bold black font but has been designed in a way to catch the attention of its audience. The masthead’s letters have cracks like broken glass; this connotes the rebelliousness of the magazine. It gives the idea that it does not conform to following musical rules but breaks them instead. The design of the masthead also portrays the image of rock music, rough and also captivating.  Kerrang!’s masthead as an apostrophe at the end, it may have been chosen to be written in this way to show the powerful expression of the magazine. The word ‘kerrang’ does not have a defined meaning but it may be onomatopoeia of the sound a strummed electric guitar. The apostrophe may have been used to display the expression of the sound of rock music ,loud. The masthead is written on a white background, this allows the black front to be seen clear and the masthead to become more noticeable.
The cover photograph is of the members of the band ‘Bring me the Horizon’. There are five members of the band but the front man, Oliver Sykes, is closer to the front of the magazine as he is the singer/screamer of the band. Another reason for this may be because he is, as their fans say, is the most attractive member of the band. As Kerrang!’s audience is mainly young men they want to also appeal to the female audience and this is a way to appeal to them. They are smarty dressed and suits and ties. This is much unexpected of a metal rock band as their typical items of clothing would consist of graphic shirts, jeans or casual trousers. This may be an attempt for the band and their music to be taken more seriously. One band member is not wearing the suit blazer as the others and his facial expression is very carefree. It is as if he is not aware that his photograph is being taken. His non conformity connotes individuality among the group and also sends a message to their readers. It may mean that their readers/fans should be who they want to be, dress the way they want to dress without restrictions. Through their non verbal communication the readers can see that they want to be taken more seriously. This is shown through their neutral facial expressions. Though they wear suits they still manage to show that they are a part of a hardcore metal rock band. This is portrayed through their hairstyles and tattoos. The front man Oliver Sykes’s hairstyle is now very popular among the rock/scene crowd which promotes the cool and unkempt look. The magazine has used this as a way of keeping the bands rough and edgy look but still maintaining their new serious look. . To capture their ‘intelligent’ look their hair is styled neatly and looks quite combed through. Oliver Sykes has a myriad tattoos on all visible parts of his body [apart from his face]. He displays his tattoos as he corrects the cuff of his very clean white shirt. The colour white is not usually associated with rock bands as they are not seen as very clean people. Black is the colour associated with rock as it is dark, grungy and also hides sweat and dirt. The position of his hand connotes authority and leadership and also makes him look bold and smart. This is the message they want to pass onto their fans and to the readers who will see this photograph.
The photograph of the young men is a medium shot, this is enough to show what they are wearing and the message they want the magazines readers to receive from it. They are all standing in an upright position facing and looking directly to the camera. They are connecting with the readers as they gaze directly forward.
The main cover line that relates to the bands photograph says: “Bring Me the Horizon Northern Uproar!’’. The cover line is making reference to where the band is from; they are from the Sheffield in the North of England. The term ‘Uproar’ is used to describe noise and mayhem. These words relate to the genre of music Bring Me the Horizon play and the crowd they bring in. The text is written in sans serif front which suggests that the magazine is modern attracting a young audience. The font is used instantly catches the attention of the reader as it bold and forward. This reflects the music that the band plays. ‘Northern Uproar’ is written in red which connotes anger, blood and passion. Their fans will agree that these words reflect the music that they create and the atmosphere their sound generates.
The different cover lines tell the audience about the other music which Kerrang! Choose to include in their magazine. They include You Me at Six which is an alternative band, Avenged Sevenfold and Metallica which are metal bands. Though the bands listed in this issue are all under the genre of rock, there is variation in the type of rock which they include. This is done to attract the attention of people who like older music in comparison to the latest songs and vice versa. The band Metallica are very famous and well known, they have been around for very long time, since 1981. Kerrang! Does not only include bands that are recent as they pay homage to the bands that opened the doors for the rest now. The cover line at the top of the page displays news that ‘Travis Barker’ a very well known member of the band Blink 182 was in a plane crash. Kerrang provides reliable and up to date news for their readers, they do not only write about music but what is happening behind the scenes also.
Considering the evaluation of the magazine, I would suggest that Kerrang! magazine is aimed at an audience of males and females [mainly males], ages 15-25. They would have a good knowledge of both past and recent bands and musicians and are very much into rock, alternative, punk-rock and metal music. They are likely to have jobs in the industry of music or music could be a major part of their lives since the readers are very passionate about music. They know of or are aware of musicians in all parts of the world [mainly the USA and the United Kingdom.

Analysis of Music Mgazines Contents Page

Analysing Music Magazine Contents Page
This is the single contents page in an issue of Kerrang! Music magazine.
This contents page has a very different layout in comparison to many other music magazines. This is because the images used are usually in the corners or at the sides of the magazine. Kerrang! have a layout that will appeal to the creative minds of the target audience of Kerrang! Magazine who differ from the mainstream. The masthead has not been located in the traditional place [at the top of the page]. This was done to make for the image at the top of the contents page . This must mean that the image must have some significant importance as it has taken over the most important space on the contents page, where the readers eyes will go as soon as they turn the previous page. The masthead is placed in the centre of the page so the readers are able to distinguish what page it is [though it is still obvious without it]. The changing of where the masthead used to be has added a edgy touch to the magazine’s contents page as it is different, looks more creative and original. The contents page title is has been placed at the top left hand corner of the page so the readers are aware of what page they have turned to as the layout differs from the other issues. An image is at the top of the page so the reader may wonder what page it is without your name included. Sans serif font is used or all of the writing on the contents page. Thos connotes that Kerrang! Are open for change and are continuously evolving. The main colours used throughout are yellow, white, black and red. The colours used are very cohesive. The way Kerrang! used them together has created a bold signature look for Kerrang!.
Underneath the ‘CONTENTS’ title is one single page spread and one double page spread. This was done planned deliberately to get the reader into what else they can find inside the magazine without actually opening it and is another way of telling them what is included in the magazine without writing it down as text with a page number. There may be fans out who see their dedicated pages and so they would be interested in reading/looking at it. Its also a chance for the other bands or musicians inside the magazine to get a chance to be noticed firsthand. Some readers just skim through the magazine or decide to go through the first few pages of the magazine but when they see the mini images of the spreads inside they may then decide to read into the magazine more. Both spread pictures are on the main image of the contents page it will receive more attention.
The main image on the contents page of Oli Sykes from the band, Bring me the Horizon. He is the singer/screamer of the band and therefore gets the most attention. This is the reason why his photograph has been used instead of the other band members. The image clearly shows him signing autographs at a concert as there are young teenage girls surrounding him and the stage lights can be seen behind him  Sykes wears a plain shirt, a popular fashion item for young men now which will surely attract female attention. According to their fan base Bring me the Horizon are receiving a lot of it. Kerrang! most definitely want to show the readers of the popularity Bring me the Horizon have gained as half of their  contents page are on them signing autographs. Through Sykes’ non verbal communication it is clear that signing autographs is now a very normal thing for him and signs away with humbleness. His behaviour is a turn away from the stereotypical ‘rock stars’ who are very boastful, obnoxious and full of pride. Though this cannot be concluded from one image but the fans of Bring me the Horizon will feel as though their Sykes’ cares about his fans and takes his time to appreciate them through him signing.
The bottom half of the contents page consists of the editor’s letter which is seen at once as her photograph id different from the others. She looks very smart looking and composed as her photograph is being taken. This is now what most people would expect from the editor of Kerrang! magazine. As most would imagine the editor as being a male that has the typical rock’n’roll look.
Besides the editors letter taking up most of the bottom half of the contents page is where the page numbers are and what the readers will find there. Kerrang! have clearly made an exceptional effort into ensuring g that their readers are entertained right from the start of their magazine. Photographs of band members such as Gustav Wood from the Young Guns, special posters of 30 Seconds to Mars and album reviews are all included on the contents page. This is a way to engage the readers and make them want to find out more about what Kerrang has to offer and to make their magazine look even more entertaining.
Each of the subheadings are written in highlighted looking text, which make the subheading more visible, appealing and interesting to read. The attention of the readers goes automatically to the subheading as this will trigger the reader’s interest as the rest may seem irrelevant as long as the subheading is interesting enough.  One of the subheadings says ‘SWAG’. This term may have been previous been referred to as prizes. Swag is the promotional merchandise distributed usually at concerts to or given away by music businesses such as Kerrang! magazine. It is not given away for a profit as most swag/prizes given away are free, but are used to promote the band, group or musician.
In the right hand corner of the page is the subscriptions box where the Kerrang! readers can subscribe for ‘£6 a month’. This seems like a reasonable amount as Kerrang comes out every week and costs £2.20. Though a small amount is saved Kerrang! Magazine readers may find this useful as they will save more than buying it every week individually. And as the target audience for the magazine is men and women of the ages 15-25 they would need to keep the price as low as they possibly would.
To conclude Kerrang! magazine include many aspects to their magazine that many others do not. Thye add their own signature look to their contents pages, no matter the layout they decide to print. This is my analysis of Kerrang! Magazines 1286 issue contents page.
